Latest GREEN LANTERN Comic Features Movie Image of Tomar-Re

In this week's Green Lantern comic issue, DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns presents a clearer image of Corps member Tomar-Re from the live action film, as well as an introduction to the character.

Green Lantern

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS... is a mantra Tomar-Re lives by which has aided him in becoming an honored and highly respected Green Lantern. It's also a mantra that the filmmakers, like production designer, costume designer Ngila Dickson and visual effects supervisor Jimmy Berney have taken as their own. Producer Donald De Line and director Martin Campbell have assembled an amazing corps.

Growing up on the planet Xudar, Tomar-Re comes from a peaceful avian race that focuses their efforts on the arts and sciences instead of war. His nature to examine everything has led the Guardians of the Universe to appoint him the archivist and protector of the sacred Book of Oa. When not studying the nature of the Corps, Tomar-Re patrols the sector of 2813 where he developed a close friendship with neighboring sector 2814's Green Lantern, Abin Sur. Tomar has taken an interest in Abin's replacement, Hal Jordan. Though Hal is not one for details, Tomar hopes to teach Hal what it means to be a Green Lantern.

Now the same thoughtfulness that Tomar-Re believes in is being utilized to bring him and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps to life on the big screen.

We've watched test after test supervised by digital effects supervisor Jim Berney based on the amazing design work by Grant and Ngila. Their passion for details is much like Tomar-Re's. Something I found extremely interesting was the mix of motion capture and straight up animation they used in creating the Green Lantern Corps. Some of the more humanoid Corps members like Tomar-Re and Kilowog started with motion capture, but most of their flying and movement beyond simple interaction was animated, some based on the movement of insects and animals and others created completely from scratch - giving them a unique, and alien, feel. It's this attention to detail - from the scales on Tomar-Re's skin to the way he turns when flies into the air - that will give the Green Lantern Corps more life than its ever seen.

With talented people like Grant, Ngila and Jim and his team pouring their heart and soul into this, it makes you realize even more than you might already how truly amazing the Green Lantern universe is.

As the New Year approaches, let's follow the advice that Tomar-Re would give to Hal: Follow your heart, believe in your will, and never, ever disrespect Sinestro!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! - Geoff Johns

Green Lantern, directed by Martin Campbell, stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins and Angela Bassett. The film is scheduled to hit 2D and 3D theaters June 17th, 2011.

I Love it!! Big Grin :D Big Grin
To be honest though, i don't like the way his beak and eyes look from this angle, but i love it all! the scales, his body, the details look awesome!
As for Geoff's introduction, i am reminded why he is so beloved by us fans all around Smile
I honestly got goosebumps when he wrote
"Follow your heart, believe in your will, and never, ever disrespect Sinestro!"!

I want so much for this to be "the next Star Wars" as they say.

GL has always been one of the most underrated characters. The GLC can stand on it's own as a whole universe and we will see it in the animated series. I'm sure. But the movie... it almost looks great... but there's this little flaw in it that I cannot identify and it's nagging at me.

Maybe it's the suits.

Maybe it's Ryan... he should have just done Deadpool and given this to someone else.

I dunno.

But I won't be negative. I won't be hopeful. I'll just wait and see.

That's more I like it! I really, seriously, monumentally, astronomically want this film to do well! The possibilities are great, and when eventually John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, and Guy Gardner show up, OMG this is gonna be one of the greatest cbms to ever come to fruition. I just hope for the best for GL cus he is one of my fav superheroes of all time.

as a lit teacher i am fond of telling students that every book has two authors: the writer, and the reader. the whole reason books still exist is that they allow us to interact with a story using our own expectations and experiences to fill in the gaps. so when we read comics, we imagine the tone and the delivery. even though the words and images are there, it's not like watching a movie.

so while a lot of people are complaining that he is not very like hal, i like ryan. a lot. i think they forget that we each read a character in our own individual way, and they think that since he doesn't fit what they imagined, he's awful. but ryan's hal is a LOT like my mental image, so i am pleased. i can picture EVERY ONE of those cheesy trailer lines in the pages of a GL comic. even the pants line. it's just that when we read comics, the jokes are toned down in our imaginations because we often want to focus on the action or even, dare i say, the message.

but even if you disagree with me, take heart. the good news, as wiser people than i have already noted, is that the trailer ryan is the pre-oa hal. we haven't seen the guy that has to put the kidding aside and find the hero within. the hal we are thinking of from the comics is a guy that went through basic training 50 years ago... or, in continuity, maybe 20. at first, the guy the ring chose was still brash and cocky... and surely would have gelled up his bangs if he started out in 2010.

While I did like the original leaked concept better, I think this one looks pretty good, very realistic. I can't wait to hear him Big Grin

I understand how most ppl are disappointed by the fact that the CGI doesn't look as real as most want it to be, and I agree in some way. But, to me, GL is not meant for "realisitc" CGI if you know what I'm trying to say. GL is full of imaginative elements. I think overall the film will be a joy to watch. Maybe not for the hardcore "masculine" types who seek MIND BLOWING CGI galore and at times blood, but for the ones who love thrills and excitement, and just plain old entertainment. I think GL will be a refreshing take on comic book films. Frankly, I hope this film is not along the lines of Dark Knight. I hope it is a mix of Iron Man, Spiderman, and Superman. I know most ppl will think that compared to the CGI seen in Tron, Avatar, and other CGI centric films, GL seems weak. To be honest, I do not care for heavy CGI or "realism." The CGI in this film is not even that bad to me. It's just fine. From how I see it, the overall story is going to be a blast. The first trailer however, left me a bit underwhelmed and wanting more, but I know the next trailer is gonna blow everyone's minds, or atleast those who love fun films.

I also prefer the concept designs of Tomar-Re and Kilowog, but I guess they wanted a more friendly look. Still looks good. It's cool how they made his proportions elongated.

Alt4, you're a lit teacher that lets his students interpret works on their own? The sky is falling. Smile

I agree with you, though, and would hope that they have some character development in the film. If Hal started on the heroic side of the continuum, he'd have no where to go. Of all superheroes, GL needs that development because, in a way, it means he's fine tuning his weapon. I did like the pacifist pilot Hal of New Frontier, as well. That was an interesting take on the character. While I don't think the trailer was mindblowing (Although, it did have its moments.), I find it more of a reflection on the marketing team and timetables than the film itself. I'm a person who doesn't care if they did Tomar-re in all prosthetics, as long as the story is told and the character is acted well.

I agree with you. I do. I'm just bitter because I wanted my Deadpool movie. Deadpool would be a one shot, so it makes sense for Ryan to do this and possibly get a trio of movies out of it... but he had DP first. He promised us. He said he would fight for it... now... it's nearly a broken promise.

I really like what you wrote and I do agree. That is why I try to let go of any preconcieved notions or my own desires for what I would like when I watch a movie or read a story. I emerse myself into the vibe of the story teller or actors. That's why I like a LOT of movies that other people think suck. I loved the Karate Kid remake. I loved They Live. Part of why people are so against this movie or that is because they can't accept that they are not the ones paying for it. They aren't the ones directing it. They are the fans or the critics and they can like or dislike it and help steer future movie making, but ultimately, the studio needs money to make it and that money comes from someone who gets to call the shots. We can whine all we want, but it's really in their hands.

I try to be thankful for what I do get... like the X-Men movies or even Spiderman 3... but that doesn't mean I don't want them to do better. It just means I won't be spending any money on it. I just wait for it to come to cable or watch a friends dvd.

I totally agree with you Naji! The look is sick but his beak and eyes are tripping me out. The beak is diffidently not long enough and the eyes remind me of a lobsters. I really hope it is the angle because now I will to be paying attention to those discrepancies the whole time he is on screen! Great. lol
