Marc Webb Narrowing Down List for J. Jonah Jameson in SPIDER-MAN 3D

Director Marc Webb is still finishing the casting process before heading into full production on the Spider-Man reboot. One of the most challenging characters to cast will be that of J. Jonah Jameson.

Most fans and critics agree that J.K Simmons’ portrayal of Jameson in the first three Spider-Man movies was inspired. Filling those shoes will be a daunting task. Supposedly, around twelve or so actors have been considered so far but only two have been named as a possibility to play the cigar chomping editor of The Daily Bugle.
First is that of Sam Elliott who has been in two other Marvel films, Hulk and Ghost Rider. Both of those roles were through other studios. The second name also has Marvel ties. It is that of John Slattery (Mad Men) who played Howard Stark in Iron Man 2.
No word on who any of the other actors may be. Sometimes a list of actors is nothing more than that, a list. Studios and directors make a list of potential actors and begin to whittle it down from there. Being on a list doesn't necessarily mean the studio will even contact a certain actor or actress. A decision should be made in the next few weeks as Sony and Webb go through the casting process. The film is being offered to agents under the title: “Untitled Teen Action Adventure Movie”.

Interesting John

That is going to be a tough one to do, file this under one of the few roles not to recast. :\

Ya know, a lot of things weren't perfect about the last Spiderman franchise (especially the entire 3rd movie) but MANY things were spot on. J.K Simmons was a bright spot in every picture. His scenes were some of the best in the series and I agree with John wholeheartedly that he should be not be replaced!!
Try as I may, I just can't get fired up about this reboot. It seems completely unnecessary. Spiderman did wonders for the superhero genre but Spiderman had it's time, got three movies and made a boat load of cash. Can't they just put him on the shelf for a few years and let demand for it build back up? I understand that there are legal issues involved for Sony and that they need to "use it or lose it" but still. With Marvel saturating the industry with their universe on film and WB bringing GL, Batman 3 and a slew of yet to be announced movies in it's wake, do we really need a Spiderman reboot at this time? Much less a reboot that is an origin story?
Fans are devoting all their laserlike geek attention to Cap, GL, Thor, Avengers, Bats 3, Man of Steel, etc. not to mention the few who are looking forward to First Class and Wolverine 2. It just feels like the big boys are playing now and Spiderman is the little kid on the sidelines wanting to be put in the game and wishing people would pay attention to him.
There will be a time and a place for a new Spiderman but it just feels like, right now, he needs to go home and get some R&R, let these other franchises do their thing and come back in a few years once we've had a chance to miss him.

Seriously...bring back JK Simmons. The man is hilarious, and was awesome in that role.

I agree completely with GLFanboy!

@GLFanboy I don't know what to say, it's going to happen no matter what so the only thing we can do is forget about it or hope the new movie is good.
Oh also, JK Simmons was pretty awesome. He was perfect.

Don't get me wrong, I DO hope it's good. I just question the timing of the release and the logic of another origin retelling. I don't want it to be a wasted effort that gets buried and lost under an avalanche of other, more anticipated movies. Spidey deserves better. But, yeah, I really do hope it's good because it's going to have to be to live up to it's competition and receive the box office dollars it's predecessor did.

I agree with most other people on here about J.K. Simmons. I don't see any reason why not to stick with some things that work in the original series, but, with the movie being a reboot, I can understand them wanting to wipe away comparisons/memories of the previous movies.
@GLFanboy- Agreed. I do believe however that Andrew Garfield will do a great job as Spidey. One thing to consider is demographics. GL, Cap, and Thor seem to be gearing for the 25+ male audience. Spidey might capture the younger Percy Jackson type market, with which they might get some competition from First Class. Either way, I'm glad they're treating comic books as a viable storytelling medium.

This is where their failure will be complete. Recasting Simmons is nearly impossible. He fucking channeled Jameson.

I hope they at least asked Simmons to come back for the role. 'Cause if he would do it, why would they want to recast?
