Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is gearing up to begin filming later this month on location in Eastern Europe, and Sony Pictures is looking to add another name to the sequel's cast. Christopher Lambert (Highlander) is in talks to join the film.
Running off a script by David Goyer, the film has been confirmed to be a direct sequel to the 2007 movie, which garnered little praise from both fans and critics. Nicolas Cage will be reprising the role of Johnny Blaze, the Ghost Rider, a demonic manifestation of vengeance. This "darker, gritter" take on the Ghost Rider story will hopefully appease the comic book reading masses.
The story sees Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider (Cage), hiding out in remote Eastern Europe and struggling to repress his curse. Blaze is recruited by a sect to take on the devil (Ciarin Hinds), who wants to take over his mortal son’s body on the boy’s birthday.
No word has been given as to what role he might play but the administrator at the official Highlander Facebook page had this to say after Christopher Lambert visited the office:
Lambert says thank you very much for all the kind comments! He says he is in talks now to do Ghost Rider 2 with Nicholas Cage. He did sword training for 3 months. His pinky is fine (thanks for asking). And if you want to marry him, he will need to see a photo first.
On a side note, if you are not aware, a Highlander remake is in the works to be directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) for release sometime in 2012.
If added, Lambert will join Nicholas Cage in the title role along with: Idris Elba (Thor) playing an alcoholic warrior monk tasked with finding Ghost Rider, and Johnny Whitworth (The Dark Fields) plays a criminal who is recruited by the devil to find the boy and is later turned into a demonic creature. Ciaran Hinds will portray the incarnation of the Devil and Italian actress-singer Violante Placido, takes up the role of the boys mother.
Columbia Pictures has scheduled a February 17th, 2012, theatrical release date for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and is being directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Crank).
