Cowboys & Aliens
Release Date: Friday, July 29, 2011
1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear.
But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.
Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents—townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors—all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

Pretttttyyy good. The plot could've been a little thicker. That was my only problem with it, though. Was just like "here's some cowboys, here's some aliens, 3,2,1, fight". But that's still awesome. Grrrreeat cast though. I for one don't go looking for believability in a movie about aliens. I go looking for cool stuff involving aliens.

I thought it was a great western - that just so happened to have aliens. lol. The alien effects looked fantastic and the battle near the end was a blast. My only big grip was with Olivia Wylde being such a useless plot device.

While there were certainly some questions raised by the choices made, especially why the aliens capture the humans in the first place, they weren't so outlandish that it broke any suspension of disbelief for me. I found it engaging from start to finish. Still can't believe this is Ford's first western. He was great and seemed to really enjoy this role.
A lot of the aliens of late all look like they came from the same family tree as of late. Some of these effects teams need some new blood or they really need to challenge themselves to go elsewhere in design concepts!

Go into this movie expecting a good, old fashioned Western Sci-Fi flick. The actors carry this movie and Harrison Ford as Colonel Dolarhyde is stupendous. Daniel Craig turns in a first rate performance as The Man With No Name and Olivia Wilde as Emma is stunning. The dark storytelling led by Ford and Craig’s characters is in conflict with what would appear to be a lighthearted theme, but it somehow works. Their characters keep you interested in the film as you forget about the plot. Cowboys & Aliens has an underlying dark side to it and that might not play well to large audiences. The two leads in the film are really both villains but you are wrapped up in their struggle against an alien force that find yourself cheering for them. On a scale of 1 to 10 we would give this a solid 7, definitely a film worth seeing in the theaters.

While it may be ridiculous in concept, it's a great film in practice. The cast hoists this film to an exceeding level of entertainment, and spot-on pacing from Favreau never gave me a minute to stop and wonder whether I should question the plot.

The film is definitely unique but, while the potential is certainly there, it unfortunately fails to deliver the fun.
As ambitious as the film is, the critical errors it makes are insurmountable for even the stellar cast to overcome. They do certainly try, though, and it’s hard to take your eyes off most of these actors.
Cowboys & Aliens is so very close to being good but, in the end, the movie seemed to accept its nonsense rather than attempt to ground it in believability; thereby causing the house of cards to collapse.
